“My guitar, my bike, and my fans — without them, I’m not me.” This single quote captures the essence of Ali Azmat, without whom the Pakistani music industry would not be where it is today. The rock chapter of Pakistan’s music history could easily have gone unnoticed had it not carried Ali’s brilliance. His innovative and daring fusion of rock with the Sufi music of South Asia gave a whole new dimension to the genre. Ali is an international icon, a global identity, and a world ambassador for music and peace. No account of the Pakistani music industry can be written without a complete section dedicated to Ali Azmat — he has left his mark and achieved unprecedented recognition on the international stage.
Ali entered the Pakistani music scene at a time when there was very little media penetration among the masses. Most singers of the era preferred to go solo, and were treated as icons in their own right. Ali bravely took up the challenge, using his originality to make his presence felt. He started with one of the country’s first rock/pop bands, Jupiters, giving the music industry the evergreen song “Dosti.”
In 1990, Ali founded the most famous and acclaimed band in South Asia, Junoon, as lead vocalist. This marked the true beginning of his legendary career. The music produced by Junoon marked a new chapter in the industry — a beautiful and mesmerizing blend of rock and Sufi music. Junoon also produced several hits addressing the country’s socio-political issues. Over the course of a decade, the band released around 20 albums, selling millions of copies worldwide.
